Salió una entrevista sobre RaroVHS.com y la colección en Cielos Argentinos, la revista de Aerolineas Argentinas. Por ser una revista que se distribuye en el aeropuerto la entrevista está en español e inglés.

Cristian Sema es el creador de Raro VHS, un blog que exhibe la colección enorme de carátulas de películas en video que él tiene y preserva el legado visual de una época.
– ¿Cuántos VHS tenés?
– Más de 3.000. Como en mi casa no entran todos, también uso mi viejo cuarto en la casa de mi mamá como depósito, donde tengo varias cajas.
– ¿Cómo empezaste a coleccionarlos?
– Mis padres tuvieron un videoclub y, cuando cerraron, me quedé con un grupo de películas, clásicos de terror de los ‘80 y los ‘70 más que nada, pero cuando llegó el DVD, tiré todo. Después me arrepentí y conseguí ese grupo de películas que tenía inicialmente.
Además, me parece un momento muy lindo el del boom del VHS: se editaba cualquier cosa sin ningún tipo de filtro. Yo tengo películas de género de Indonesia, Grecia, Japón… Además, la estética: las carátulas hechas a mano son obras de arte, muchas veces de gente desconocida.
– ¿Cómo los conseguís?
– La mejor manera es buscando en videoclubs. En general, si tienen te los venden; se los quieren sacar de encima porque es un negocio que ya no da para más. Pero es cada vez más difícil, porque quedan pocos y tenés que rastrear alguno que quede de los ‘80.
– ¿Pagaste mucho por alguna película?
– No, en algunos casos pagué 40 ó 50 pesos, que es lo que sale un DVD nuevo. Pero el delirio de pagar 100 dólares por una gema no existe acá, porque no hay una industria [sic: “mercado” es una palabra más adecuada que “industria”] como en otros países.
– ¿Tenés una preferida de tu colección?
– Sí. Me gusta coleccionar bastante cine argentino, rarezas. La casa de las siete tumbas es una película argentina de terror de 1982 en la que actúan Miguel Ángel Solá, Juan Leyrado, María Leal, Soledad Silveyra y alguno más. De esa película conseguí dos versiones, la argentina, de una distribuidora muy chica llamada Lumiere, y la de EE. UU., que tiene un arte de tapa hermoso.
– ¿Tenés algún proyecto más con Raro VHS?
– Sí. Este año voy a sacar un libro de investigación sobre las películas editadas acá, cómo funcionaba el negocio y [tratará de] retratar el momento del boom del VHS. No hay nada de eso, y me parece que estaría bueno que existiese algo.

-How many VHS do you have?
-More than 3,000. They don’t all fit in my house, so I also use my old room at my mom’s house for storage. I have several boxes there.
-How did you start collecting?
-My parents had a video store and, when it closed, I took a group of films, classic horror from the 70s and 80s more than anything. But when DVDs came out, I threw everything away. I later repented and acquired that group of films that I’d had initially. As well, to me, the era of the VHS seems like a nice time. All kinds of movies were released without any filtering. I have genre films, from Indonesia, Greece, Japan. In addition, the aesthetics. The covers, made by hand, are works of art, often by unknown artists.”
-How do you find them?
-The best way is to look in video stores. In general, if they’re going to sell them to you, it’s because they’re going out of business. But it is increasingly difficult because there are fewer and fewer out there and you have to search to find any remains of the 80s.”
” Have you paid a lot for a movie?”
“No, in some cases, I paid 40 or 50 pesos, which is what you pay for a new DVD. But the madness of paying 100 dollars for a gem does not exist here, because there is no industry like there is in some other countries.”
-Do you have a favorite in your collection?
-Yes. I like to collect rare Argentinean films. La Casa de las Siete Tumbas is an Argentinean horror film from 1982 with Miguel Ángel Solá, Leyrado, María Leal, Soledad Silveyra and others. I was able to get two versions of this movie. An Argentinean one put out by a very small distributor called Lumiere, and the U.S. version, which has beautiful cover art.”
-Do you have any other projects beyond Raro Vhs?
-Yes, this year I have a book coming out. It’s a research piece about movies made here, how the business worked and the time of the VHS boom. There is nothing out there about that and I think it’s good to have something. What interests me is that there is a way of preserving a time that was very important in film history and is quite unknown.”
